1 1-oz. Ball Contrasting Color
NOTE: Colors will be referred to as follows: Main color-MC; Contrasting color-CC. Always be sure to twist yarns once when changing colors, to avoid making a hole. Before starting pattern, wind MC into 2 balls and CC into 3 balls.

With MC cast on 71 sts. Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 2 in. then work in pattern as follows:

Row 1-Knit 1 CC-34 MC-1 CC-34 MC-1 CC.

Row 2-Purl 2 CC-32 MC-3 CC-32 MC-2 CC.

Row 3-Knit 3 CC-30 MC-5 CC-30 MC-3 CC.

Row 4-Purl 4 CC-28 MC-7 CC-28 MC-4 CC.
Continue in the above manner, adding 1 more st in color to the CC half diamonds on each end; 2 more sts to the CC center diamond; decreasing 1 st in color on each side of the MC half diamonds, every row, until the 2 MC half diamonds have been completed and sts are on the Needles as follows:

Row 17-Knit 17 CC-2 MC-33 CC-2 MC-17 CC.

Row 18-Purl back in CC only.

Row 19-Repeat row 17.

Row 20-Repeat row 16.

Continue in the above manner, adding 1 more st in color to the MC diamonds; decreasing 1 st in color to the CC half diamonds on each end and 2 sts in color to the center CC diamond, every row, until center CC diamond has been completed and sts are on the Needle as follows:

Row 35-Knit 35 MC-1 CC-35 MC.

Row 36-Purl 34 MC-3 CC-34 MC.

HEEL: With MC knit 17. Place remaining 54 sts on st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the 17 heel sts for 26 rows ending with a purl row. Turn this half of heel as follows:

Row 1-K 2, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 3; turn.

Row 3-K 3, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 4; turn.

Row 5-K 4, K 2 tog., K 1; turn; slip 1, P 5; turn.

Continue working in the above manner until all sts are worked; there will be 10 sts on the Needle, ending with K 8, K 2 tog., K 1. Pick up and knit 14 sts on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand and work across the 37 instep sts in pattern as follows: Knit 16 MC-5 CC-16 MC. Place the 61 sts just worked, on st-holder. Work back and forth in stockinette st on the remaining 17 heel sts for 27 rows, ending with a knit row. Turn this half of heel as follows:

Row 1-P 2, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 3; turn.

Row 3-P 3, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 4; turn.

Row 5-P 4, P 2 tog., P 1; turn; slip 1, K 5; turn.

Continue working in the above manner until all sts are worked; there will be 10 sts on the Needle, ending with P 8, P 2 tog., P 1. Pick up and purl 14 sts on side of heel. Place the sts from st-holder to left hand Needle and purl across row as follows:

Purl 15 MC-7 CC-purl remaining sts in MC (85 sts). Continuing to add 1 st in color to the center CC diamond on every row, working all remaining sts in MC; shape instep as follows:

INSTEP SHAPING:

Row 1-K 22, K 2 tog., pattern over 37, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 22.

Row 2 and all even rows purl.

Row 3-K 21, K 2 tog., pattern over 37, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 21.

Row 5-K 20, K 2 tog., pattern over 37, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 20.

Continue decreasing as given above, adding 1 st in color on each side of the CC diamond every row, until sts are on the Needle across the 37 instep sts as follows: 3 MC-31 CC-3 MC. On the next row, start decreasing 1 st in color on each side of the center CC diamond on every row, continuing the instep decreases, until 71 sts remain. Work even, continuing pattern across instep, until the center diamond has been completed and sts are on the Needle as follows: Knit 35 MC-1 CC-35 MC. Break off CC yarn. Work even in stockinette st, in main color only, until foot measures 2 in. less than desired length measuring from back of heel.

Decrease for toe as follows:

Row 1—K 15, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 29, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 15.

Row 2 and all even rows purl.

Row 3—K 14, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 27, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 14.

Row 5—K 13, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 25, K 2 tog., K 2, slip 1, K 1, PSSO, K 13.

Continue decreasing as given above until 23 sts remain.

Weave tip of sock tog. Sew back and sole seam.

Work other sock to correspond.
