3 balls Toltec Yellow or color of your choice for hat
5 balls Toltec Yellow for bag
7 balls will make both hat and bag
Steel Crochet Hook No. 4 or No. 3
1-3/4 yd. 1 inch ribbon
1 yd. hat wire
1/4 yd. buckram
HAT

Ch 5, join to form a ring, ch 1 and work 12 sc in ring, do not join this or following rounds. Place a marker at the beginning of each round.
2nd Round.  2 dc in each sc.
3rd Round. * Dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * all around.
4th Round. * 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * all around.
5th - 8th Rounds. * 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * all around. Continue working in same manner until there are 6 dc between each increasing point (about 4-3/4 inches in diameter).
9th Round. Working in dc increase in every 6th dc.
10th Round. Increase in every 7th dc. Work 7 rounds even in dc, or until work measures 5 inches from center, then work 1 sdc in each of the next 2 sts (sdc = thread over book, insert in st, pull loop through, thread over and work off all loops at one time), 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, sl st in next st to even round.

Next Round. Start Brim: Ch 3, dc in same space, * 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * 16 times, 1 sdc in each of the next 3 dc, * 2 sdc in next dc, 1 sdc in each of the next 3 dc, repeat from * 13 times, join in 3rd st of ch.
Next Round. Ch 3, dc in same space, * 1 dc in each of the next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * 16 times, * 1 sdc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 sdc in next st, repeat from * 13 times, 1 sdc in each remaining st, join in 3rd st of ch.
Next Round. Ch 3, dc in same space, * 1 dc in each of the next 5 sts, 2 dc in next st, repeat from * 16 times, 1 sdc in each remaining st, join.
Next Round. Ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 122 sts, 1 sdc in each of the next 83 sts, 1 dc in each remaining st, join.
Next Round. Ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 125 sts, 1 sdc in each of the next 77 sts, 1 dc in each remaining st, join.
Next Round. Ch 3, 1 dc in each of the next 128 sts, 1 sdc in each of the next 71 sts, 1 dc in each remaining st, join.
Next Round. Working over wire, ch 1, 1 sc in each st, join, cut thread.

TABS: Ch 9, join to form a ring, ch 1 and work 1 sc in each st, do not join this or following rounds.
Next 8 Rounds. 1 sc in each sc, join at end of last round, cut thread leaving a length for sewing. Sew tabs to either side of hat as illustrated. Cut ribbon in half and lace through tabs as illustrated.

Ch 46, 4 dc in 4th st from hook, 1 dc in each remaining st of ch working 5 dc in last st, working on opposite side of ch, 1 dc in each st, join in 3rd st of ch.

Next Round. Picking up entire st by inserting book under the entire st, work 1 sc around each dc, join, turn.
Next Round. Ch 2, 1 dc in each st, do not join this or following rounds. Place a marker at the beginning of each round.
Next Round. Dc in 2nd st of ch 2, 1 dc in each dc.
Next 27 Rounds. 1 dc in each dc then work 1 sdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next st, cut thread.

HANDLES: Crochet a chain about 14-3/4 inches long, sc in 2nd st from hook, 1 sc in each remaining st of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.
Next 6 Rows. 1 sc in each sc, cut thread at end of last row leaving a length for sewing. Sew long sides together. Make another handle in same manner.

FINISHING: Cut a piece of buckram same size as bottom of bag.  Cut another piece of buckram long enough to fit around outer edge of 1st piece and 7-1/2 inches high. Sew 1 long edge to outer edge of 1st piece. Sew short edges together. Place in bag and turn free part of top of bag downward over the buckram, sew in position. Line if desired. Place handles in position about 3 inches in from sides and 2-1/2 inches down from top. Sew to bag leaving about 1 inch opening from lower edge free for ribbon.  Cut 4-6 inch strips of ribbon. Place through free ends of bag as illustrated.
