After the cookies are baked and while they are cooling, get together the things you'll need for frosting and decorating them.
To make frosting:
You will need the following ingredients:
*3 cups confectioners' sugar
*1/2 teaspoon vanilla
*3 tablespoons milk
Add the vanilla and milk to the sugar. Mix until smooth and easy to spread. Divide frosting into several small bowls. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl, making one red, one blue, and one yellow. Leave one bowl of frosting white.
To make chocolate frosting, melt one square of unsweetened chocolate and add to some of the white frosting which you have set aside in a bowl.
Spread the frosting on the cookies with a flat tableknife.
To make the fancy white swirls and curlicues on the cookies, it is best to have a cake decorating kit. Two kinds are shown in the picture above. One is metal and the other is cloth or cloth-like vinyl. Both come with several points that are screwed on at the front. Fill the decorator with frosting and squeeze out a line of frosting by turning the handle on the metal one or pressing the cloth one between your thumb and fingers. Guide the decorator around the cookie just as you would a paint brush.
After you have put on the white lines, press into the frosting all sorts of extra trimmings: red cinnamon drops, raisins, chopped nuts and cherries, cut-up gumdrops, or tiny silver candies.
Frost some of the cookies with white and then sprinkle colored sugar on them. You can buy colored sugar in the grocery store or you can make your own. Simply put some granulated sugar in a jar with a screw top. Add a few drops of food coloring. Put the top on the jar, and shake it. You can color coconut the same way.
