Make A Queen's Mask
for Halloween
The Queen Mask is shaped over a simple curved mold. You can use a pot or a jug, as shown here.

Cover one side of the curved form with a layer of wet cloth to keep the mask from sticking to it. Then paste on three layers of dry newspaper to form a base for the mask. For cheeks, lips, and nose, crumple wads of newspaper. Fasten each wad to the base with torn strips of dry newspaper and paste.
Cover these bumps with several layers of paper mache pulp ( see page one ). Work over the raised areas with your fingers to get a smooth surface.

When the mask is dry, remove it from the jug. Using a sharp knife, carefully trim the edge to form the shape of the face.
Color the face with poster paints. Make the hair out of red-orange crepe paper, fringed and curled over a pencil. Fashion a crown out of gold paper. Trim it with bits of old jewelry, sequins, or paper cut-outs.
